This page to discover Cuba

CUBA

.

At the end of this year 2005, we have still changed the mind.

We had initially planned to go to Madagascar, but financially too expensive, we shut on Caribbean and more precisely Cuba.

Details of circuit

This ile has all that needs to please us: his population, its history, its geography and in most cases its summer weather forecast, especially that we planned to finish this circuit by one stay.

Therefore we ordered this journey with Jet Tours to our habitual tour operator and for a complete length of 16 days.

Havana

Departure in time in the airport of Marseille-Provence for Paris-Roissy and then takeoff with Air France for the ile of Cuba.

At our arrival more than late in Havana (Icone), we were directly to make a big refreshing beddy-byes to our hotel on Maleçon .

Viñales

Early start by the northern road towards the valley of Viñales (Icone).

This region is famous for its tobacco , and sugar cane plantations and its royal palm trees, in landscapes dotted with limestone rock peaks: the Mogotes.

Pinar del rio

In Pinar Del Rio (Icone) , this is the unmissable tour of cigar making in small, overheated workshops.

In fact, they use a wooden board to rest the tobacco leaf on their thighs.

The small universe of rollers is the most respected caste in the world of cigars.

You should know that a minimum of six years are necessary in order to correctly master the art of cigar rolling. the roller must know how to tune the different tobaccos.

Indeed, the harmonious combustion of a cigar is an important qualitative point.

Havana

Back in the capital, we take a long tour of the city on foot, first through its historic center: the Capitol (a copy of Washington's) , Parque Central, Place des Armes (the oldest in the city), the Captains General Museum..

Then continuing on foot, the Cathedral Square, the most beautiful square: the Plaza Vieja dating from the 16th century where the rich merchants built magnificent residences.

Since 1942, La Bodeguita del Medio , the most famous of the taverns, has seen the high society of the world pass by, especially Ernest Hemingway, inventor of a cocktail, among other things.

After that, a visit to a museum, that of Rum: Havana Club with an explanation of the production and of course a tasting!!.

A small craft market to eliminate the alcoholic vapors and passage in the modern part which has little interest.

Apart from the Place de la Révolution , its various ministries with the front, its cars from another age and the Védado (central district of the city).

Santa Clara

We leave the capital again by the small roads with a stop to visit the house of Ernest Hemingway, bad luck for us, it is in full restoration (for more than a year ...).

Santa-Clara (Icone), memorial city of 'Che' where he stopped an armored train full of troops, and partly saved the revolution.

Cienfuegos

Cienfuegos (Icone), 'la perle du sud' was founded by French winegrowers in the 19th century.

There is also the Thomas Terry Theater which could hold a thousand spectators.

Finally, the Palatio del Valle , a residence combining Moorish, Gothic and Greek styles.

On the way back, visit a huge botanical garden, created by a sugar cane planter where an incredible amount of trees and plants from the various British colonies of the time are grouped together.

Trinidad

The city of Trinidad (Icone) is the most authentic and the most romantic of the colonial cities of the island.

It's almost a city-museum with all its different architectures that trace the bourgeois life of the rich village of that time.

The cobbled streets lead us to the Santisima Trinidad church , to the Casa de la Trovo , a bar where Salsa and Cuban music groups play.

A small craft market of embroidery, wood carvings and other odds and ends completes the visit.

What it is necessary to know

History

Spain won the island in the course of the XVIth century. Conflicts for independence go back up in the middle of the XVIIIth century. The United States of America intervened in the war of independence of the Cubans and occupied the island from 1898 till 1902, then from 1905 till 1909.

The United States followed an interference marked until 1934 (revocation of ' « amendment Platt »). Fidel Castro became leader of a rebel army in 1958, overturning the dictator Fulgencio Batista on the January 1st, 1959.

The United States are one of the first governments to acknowledge diplomatically this new regime January 7th), but reports between both countries go bad from May during the confiscation of the foreign assets (which those of United Fruit and Co) in Cuba.

Later, from 17 till 21 April 1961 took place a try of disembarkation in the Berry of the Pigs of 1 500 taking refuge, recruited, paid and drawn away by American CIA, which ended in a failure.

The United States set up an economic embargo in 1962, but abandoned any plague of Cuba to an agreement signed to make the deal of the missiles of Cuba. The country was supported for a long time by USSR which granted him a help (4 - 6 billions USD per year until 1990), but having faced up a serious economic crisis since the disappearing of the « Soviet elder brother ».

At the age of 83, Fidel Castro announced on April 19th, 2011 which he left the direction of the Cuban Communist Party, after half a century at the head and at the head of the country. Already in 2008, it entrusted the reins of power to his brother Raul.

Policy

Cuba is a socialist country, a parliamentary republic where the Communist Party is the only political party acknowledged by Constitution. Fidel Castro was the leader of the State and the government since 1959, first as prime minister and then, in the abrogation of this load in 1976, as state head of government.

It is also representing it to the National Assembly of the municipality of Santiago of Cuba since 1976, First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party and commander-in - chief of armed forces. The Cuban Parliament is the National Assembly (Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular).

His 609 members are elected for 5 years in majority polls for a single candidate in two towers. The National Assembly elects the Council of Stat in its breast and its president in free, direct and secret vote. Owing to the catch of power by the communists in 1959, the island is subjected to an embargo on behalf of the United States

Population

It is composed of whites (descendants of the settlers), of mestizo (marriage inter-ethnic) and of blacks (descendants of the slaves of Africa). The longevity in Cuba is superior to what it is in the United States. Some people allocate this result by the way that the consumption of fats of animal origin is there much weaker, poverty obliges.

However Cuba has a good rate of médicalisation. It suffers, on the contrary, from its emigration towards the coasts of Florida with his numerous dead during passage.

Géography

The island of Cuba is located between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic, in the south of Florida. It is the biggest island of Antilles, with its 1600 islets from which the most important is the island of Pines (Island of Youth), 3861 km long. Geographically, it is close to the tropic of the Cancer, in 77 km of Haiti in the East; in 140 km of Jamaïque, in the Southeast; in 180 km of the United States, in the Northeast; and in 210 km from Mexico, on the West.

The Republic consists of the whole island as well as Isla de la Juventud (Island of Youth), but the berry of Guantanamo occupied since 1898 by the United States is rented since 1903 and a naval base was installed.

Additional information

When to leave?

When you want it, but the best season, it is of the end of November in May.

Transport

The conditions of transport remain a major problem in Cuba. Cars circulate not much and on short distance, trains are rare and buses are taken of attack.

Sleep / Eat

Cuba is far from being a culinary destination, although in the tourist centres the quality of the kitchen is in net improvement. For several years, a vast operation of renovation allows to the ancient hotels to find a second youth, starting with those of the historical centre of Havana, otherwise five big hotel chains share the majority of the Cuban park.
